MOTHERHOOD MATTERS by Connie Sokol: Book Review

Motherhood Matters by Connie Sokol is a terrific book for a Mother's Day present. The cover is simple and sweet in white and purple, with a large lavender daisy. Also, the smaller size of the book makes it perfect for slipping into a handbag or a knitting tote. While the book is divided into three sections (The Divinity of Motherhood, The Reality of Motherhood, and The Rewards of Motherhood), each section is further divided into a number of two-to-three page chapters containing humorous stories, inspirational experiences and insightful observations, all of which I believe would appeal to any woman--mother or not--old or young.

One of my favorite chapters is entitled, "And What of Our 2,060?" I like this portion of the book because the author describes her way of envisioning current friends in the role of long ago Book of Mormon mothers. Sokol tells the reader how mothers today who "tell their children no to certain video games" and who "drive carpools...who set curfews and check homework," are just as influential as the "valiant mothers of Helaman's stripling warriors". As an example, Sokol points to her own mother who set a certain standard in the house to maintain modesty and morality. While Sokol found her mother's rules hard to live by at time, she admits now she feels a debt of gratitude toward her mother for maintaining standards that offered protection and love.

Motherhood Matters is a delight! I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
